about metallicity.com |
Metallicity.com began...
in 1998 as a graphics and web design
hobby site. It is currently my 3D and artwork repository and web
"workbook" that might be considered an outlet for my own creative
energies. I do a lot of freelancing (web design) when time permits,
so I often try out new design styles, scripts, applications, etc. on
my own site, or I'll develop another site to a subdirectory here if
a customer/friend hasn't started a webhosting account at that point.
Hence, "workbook on port 80."
Some of the tools used to create the graphics and other
functionality of these pages are Notepad (I have WYSIWYG editors,
but I only use them to see what I get before posting... they're
notoriously inflexible), 3D Studio Max, trueSpace 6.6, Adobe
PhotoShop 7.0.1, Abobe Illustrator 10, Metacreations Bryce 5.5
(recently acquired by Corel®), Carrara, RDS 5.5, Corel's Photo-Paint
9 suite and associated plugins by KPT. Dell Precision XEON
workstations and Micron Millennia Max PCs provide the application
platforms. This site is hosted at
mCODEX,
my semi-pro home-office ISP on Windows 2000 and 2003 servers.
During the day (and night, and weekends, and anytime I am trying to
sleep and the interns can find my cellphone number), I am the
Director MIS / SysAdmin / NetAdmin of a growing radio broadcasting
company located in Akron, OH and have been in the IT field since the
early 1990s, primarily in broadcasting, Museum and Planetarium
institutional settings. A partial resume is
posted here.
On the lighter side of things, here's what I do... I'm in charge of
all of the computer / network / server / applications for a seven
(and possibly more down the road) station radio broadcasting company
here in Ohio and our satellite offices in Michigan. In January of
2003 I installed our own ISP for our various stations' webhosting,
e-mail, FTP and ASP needs, so I also spend my time supervising that
as well (read: kicking the servers back into bloody submission from
time to time) and consuming hideous quantities of sunflower seeds. I
love being on call 24/7 (Eck...), but that's what they pay me the
Big Quarters for. I enjoy wearing
ThinkGeek t-shirts that say "Got
Root?" and "I read your e-mail" to the serious detriment of the
paranoia of the salespeople in the office. Some days are filled with
anxiety-ridden kinetic energy attempting to fix or replace a PC
component or an entire network system, other days I surf and wait
for something to break. But given enough caffeine and the
aforementioned sunflower seeds, I can lay and terminate a mile of
CAT5e faster than you can say "I'm out of open router ports."
Thanks,
-Bryan
Common Questions (FAQ)
Does the name Metallicity have anything to do with...?
Probably not. Metallicity has nothing whatsoever to do with the rock
group Metallica, or with the metals industry (so would the steel
wholesaler please stop e-mailing me?). Metallicity is a term used in
Astronomy to denote characteristics of stars, and also has to do
with certain material properties in 3D graphics, two hobbies that I
both enjoy. Because both of my interests had a term in common, I
used Metallicity for the name.
How many people are employed at Metallicity? Can I send you my
resume?
Just one (me). Although I do use a few, select subcontractors for
various duties when I have a larger contract job or when the needs
of the project requires things out of my skill set. I don't accept
resumes as I'm not planning on hiring and I don't want to give a
false impression to anyone. I am in individual freelancer with
full-time duties elsewhere (read above).
What's up with this revision?
The current version of the site is R18. I'm trying to get away from
the previous public version (R17 never saw the light of day because
it used too many components that weren't sufficiently cross-browser
compatible) as it simply appeared a little 'stark and sanitized'.
Simply, the white backgrounds started to drive me a little crazy.
